Opening Celebration of the Squirrel and Mountain Nurturing Community in Shanghai (China)

For almost a year now twenty-two teachers and five parents from the Motherground Waldorf School have been hard at work building an inclusive curative education community in the Minghan District of Shanghai, China.

On May 1, 2021, their hard work was realized in the opening of Squirrel and Mountain Nurturing Community. Squirrel and Mountain Nurturing Community is one of the first of its kind in China – a Camphill movement initiative – a residential community where people with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities live, work, and look after each other based on the principles of anthroposophy. Squirrel and Mountain Nurturing Community currently consists of four partially residential buildings that contain a cafe, mini-store, tea house, meditation center, wood workshop, eurythmy room, and more; and one schoolhouse. In its first upcoming school year, Autumn 2021, thirteen staff members will be working in the community, with some of them residing there as well. It is everyone’s hope within the community that each perfectly formed spirit and their destiny are recognized for their potential.
