Opening of the new Sunfield Garden School Building on 16 May 2025

Report by Bart Vanmechelen

It was an honour to represent the Section at the opening of the new classrooms at Sunfield Lower School a few weeks ago. I vividly remembered the “recasting ceremony” in 2018 and was deeply moved to see how much has changed since then.

Back then, everyone seemed to be looking to the past, to reconnect with the rich history of anthroposophy, curative education, music therapy, colour light therapy and hydrotherapy, which found fertile ground at Sunfield. It seemed as if everyone was taking a deep breath to dive into the challenges ahead. How different it feels now: this place breathes and is full of life and is palpably future-oriented.

The new classrooms overlook the fields and farm in the middle of the rolling countryside. Vegetables and herbs are literally within reach and the animals invite interaction.

Across the street, behind the new farm buildings, a new seed is already sprouting for a powerful future-oriented project: the George Adams Learning and Research Centre, which will be home to Goethean science and research into projective geometry and the working of colours.

Congratulations to the school team, to the people who realised this project and to the Ruskin Mill Trust, which carries this beautiful organisation, and last but not least: congratulations to the children that bring these impulses for a humane future into society.
